Third Term 1999

The focus of this course lies in learning how to apply the writing process learned in the first semester of composition to particular questions on the nature of the human experience. For that reason, there will be an intense query into the relevant literature on the subject, which will require a great deal of reading and writing in the attempt to assist the student in preparing to answer the question: Why?

As the basis of this course is on developing interpretive and analytical skills, in addition to honing research strategies, most of the assignments in this course will require the documentation of relevant criticism within the essays.

The assignments will be taken from the texts The Millennium Reader and Strategies for Successful Writing, available in the college bookstore.

Of the assignments taken from The Millennium Reader, there will be four major synthesis essays, organized as follows: Click on each of the following project markers for a student essay example.

First Synthesis Project—Units 1-3—Due 26 March A 2nd example.  A 3rd example.

Second Synthesis Project—Units 4-6—Due 23 April A 2nd exampleA 3rd example. A 4th example.

Third Synthesis Project—Units 7-9—Due 14 May (no examples are available)

Fourth Synthesis Project—Units 10-12—Due 4 June (no examples are available)

For each Synthesis Project, you are to choose one of the units and read all of the short stories, essays, and poetry therein and establish a common theme that runs throughout each. This means that you’ll have a bit of reading to do every night, and if you divide up the reading so that you’re reading one article a night, you won’t find yourself with 90 pages to read the day before the assignment is due. Helpful supplementary handouts will be distributed regularly during the three-week duration of each Synthesis Project.

These synthesis projects will be 4-5 typed pages in length and each must be accompanied by an annotated bibliography. These will each count as 15% of your total course grade, comprising 60% of your total term average. So, do a good job on them.

Another 30% of your semester grade will be derived from assignments within Strategies for Successful Writing, which will be collected on a regular basis.

Finally, your input and participation in class will make up another 10% of your course grade.

Late papers will be docked a letter grade for each class meeting they are late.

Do not be absent. A student who accumulates more than four absences will be automatically dropped. Poor attendance will affect your overall class performance and your course grade.
